De hobbit Bilbo Baggins houdt er van om met rust gelaten te worden. Dit gebeurt ook, tot op een dag zijn vriend, de tovenaar Gandalf, langs komt. Na zijn bezoek komt er één voor één een groep dwergen binnen en voor hij het weet raakt Bilbo betrokken bij hun missie om hun koninkrijk terug te winnen. Hiervoor moeten ze echter wel de slechte draak Smaug verslaan. Onderweg vindt Bilbo een ring, waar hij veel profijt van zal hebben. Gebaseerd op het kinderboek "The Hobbit" van J.R.R. Tolkien, dat als voorloper van de beroemde Lord of the Rings trilogie zou gaan dienen.
